Teesside siblings Cattle & Cane release their brand new album Navigator on limited edition transparent red vinyl on Friday 13th December 2019.
Produced by Pete Hammerton (The Shires, The Wandering Hearts, Tom Gregory), brother/sister duo Joe and Helen Hammill display a confidence and maturity that sees their soaring harmonies and timeless song-writing come to the fore.
Although they didn’t realise it when they were writing and recording it, Navigator is undoubtedly a break-up album. The idea of trying to find your way after the end of a relationship is a theme that runs throughout almost every song.
“Lyrically, this album is definitely our most introspective and heart on sleeve. Loving The Hurt Away was the last song written for the album and it pretty much sums up the whole record and concludes the stage I’m at in life right now” says Joe.
“It was only once we’d finished recording all of the songs that I realised how many of them are about failed relationships!” he surmises.
“As we are growing up as artists, our music taste has been growing up too and I think that’s reflected on Navigator” explains Helen.
“For the first time ever, we took a step back last year and actually thought about how Cattle & Cane should sound and where we want to take it” continues Joe.
“This is the music we’ve always wanted to be making and we’re so happy with how this album has turned out. It’s the proudest we’ve been of anything we’ve worked on” adds Helen.
“We’ve always been ambitious, but I think locking ourselves away with Pete [Hammerton] for the last few months has enabled us to create some songs that really justify our ambition” she continues.
Having spent the past couple of years sharing stages with the likes of Tom Odell, Brian Wilson, Stereophonics, The Head & The Heart, Madness, Lewis Capaldi, Jake Isaac and Nerina Pallot, Cattle & Cane have every right to be ambitious.
Sold-out signs are commonplace at their own headline gigs too, including huge regional statement dates at Sage Gateshead and Middlesbrough Town Hall, where a crowd of 1,100 witnessed a magical performance alongside the Northern Orchestra last year.
Helen and Joe have also appeared at acclaimed international tastemaker events Canadian Music Week and Reeperbahn Festival, as well some of the UK’s best boutique and inner-city showcases like Tramlines, Live At Leeds, Liverpool Sound City, Cambridge Folk Festival, Black Deer and Deer Shed – not to mention the BBC Introducing stage at BBC Radio 2 Live in Hyde Park.
The first single to be taken from the new album, Mexico, received further support from BBC Radio 2 courtesy of long-time fan Dermot O’Leary and OJ Borg, who after premiering the single, invited the band in for a live session which also featured on Anneka Rice’s weekly Pick of Radio 2 show.
Further acclaim for Mexico came from Spotify’s prestigious New Music Friday UK playlist, Hype Machine blogs Indietronica, Popmuzik and Going Solo, influential daily Record of the Day, the BT TV Music playlist, BBC Introducing ‘Track Of The Week’ and Janice Long at BBC Radio Wales.
In support of Navigator, Cattle & Cane headed out on tour across the UK this autumn, culminating in their biggest London headline show to date at Oslo:
